Sunsilk × Girl Geek Academy

Sunsilk

We teamed up with Sunsilk to help “Rethink Pink” with free school holiday workshops — equipping mums and girls to support each other into STEM careers.

This is proof of a partnership delivered — not an open public calendar. Want something like this for your brand or community?

Sooo, what is STEM?

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. STEM learning brings these subjects together to help us understand the world, and prepare for future possibilities and careers.

Whether a daughter wants to be a games designer, climate scientist, CEO or geologist — STEM skills matter. Girl Geek Academy is committed to helping wherever we can.

Why STEM careers matter

“Gender inequality in STEM industries limits progress and innovation. The experiences of diverse women and girls is crucial in solving the problems that shape our lives. We need more women and girls in STEM to play a vital role in solving the world’s future challenges.”

What Sunsilk’s research found

In 2021 Sunsilk surveyed over 1,400 women across Australia and New Zealand. Together we used those insights to design workshops families would actually join.

  • Misconceptions around careers and futures in STEM still hold families back
  • Mums and daughters want practical ways to learn together
  • Free, friendly workshops lower the barrier to trying STEM for the first time
Only 1 in 10 mums have a strong understanding and knowledge of STEM skills to impart to their daughtersAlmost 2 in 3 girls list their mums as their most influential role model

Why Sunsilk and Girl Geek Academy?

Our shared goal: more women and girls in STEM.

Sunsilk is on a mission to inspire women and girls alike. Its research showed young girls feel a career in STEM is not achievable for them. Through Sunsilk’s Rethink Pink campaign, we brought mums and daughters together to better understand the career pathways available to them in STEM industries.

The 2021 Sunsilk Rethink Pink Study surveyed 1,000 Australian and 400 New Zealand women aged 16–60+ in March 2021, with a nationally representative sample. Research by Pure Profile.
