The founder of Brisbane group Pub Choir has revealed that their cover of the Kate Bush classic Running Up That Hill almost did not happen.
Interviewed on Channel 10’s The Project on Friday, organiser Astrid Jorgensen said that Bush’s publisher had warned her that the star usually says ‘no’, to performance requests.
The 1985 hit has blown up anew after it was featured on Netflix series Stranger Things.
‘It’s a rare moment in music history where your mum and your kid might love the same song at the same time.
Over 1000 people spent an evening learning the tune before filming their performance, with the cover video going viral on social media.
‘We told everyone on the night please treasure this moment,’ she said. ‘This is rare we should really embrace spending the night with this beautiful song.’
After finally seeing the performance, Kate Bush sent a personal note of thanks to Jorgensen.
‘Dear Brisbane Pub Choir, I’ve been so busy that I’ve only just had the chance to watch you all singing RUTH,’ she began the email, news.com.au reported.
‘It’s utterly, utterly wonderful! I love it so much! Thank you everyone. You sing it really beautifully.’
The Girl Geek Academy team were there on the night and the feeling was amazing.
