The Minister for Skills and Training today announced a groundbreaking $4.9 million initiative to expand capability and create leadership pathways in Australia’s technology sector.

The FemTech program unites seven leading organisations to drive systemic change across the industry, which currently contributes $167 billion to Australia’s GDP, equivalent to 8.5%. The sector is growing jobs twice as fast as other sectors, with Australia needing to recruit 1.3 Million technology workers by 2030.

“With the tech sector needing to increase by 52,000 workers a year, this comprehensive industry development program will help Australian businesses access and develop the talent they need to compete globally,” said Sarah Moran, co-founder of Girl Geek Academy. “We’re building comprehensive support systems – from industry-specific safety training to professional development and mentoring networks – that will help create the next generation of tech leaders.”

“Central to addressing Australia’s tech skills shortage is the development of clear vocational pathways into the sector in ways that directly respond to industry needs,” Moran added. “Through our partnership with TAFE Queensland, innovative “TAFE at School” programs plus certificate and diploma course provide the vocational pathways crucial to developing the skilled workforce Australia needs to remain globally competitive.”

The partnership brings together:

  • Professionals Australia – delivering workplace safety and industry reform
  • TAFE Queensland – pioneering inclusive technical education
  • Girl Geek Academy – spearheading innovation in tech education
  • Gender Lens Australia – implementing cultural change frameworks
  • Koorie Women Mean Business – advancing First Nations leadership
  • Women’s Agenda – amplifying success stories
  • Telstra Foundation – fostering community leadership

Key initiatives include:

  • 224 places in industry-designed technical courses delivered through TAFE
  • 300 places in specialised workplace safety and cultural change programs
  • 200 leadership and professional development positions
  • #SheHacks 2026 and 2027 events connecting industry leaders with emerging talent

“This program recognises that true industry transformation requires change at every level,” Ms Moran said. “We’re creating the support structures, professional networks, and leadership pathways that will help shape a more innovative and inclusive tech sector.”

The program is part of the Australian Government’s Building Women’s Careers initiative which forms part of the Future Made in Australia strategy.
