#MissMakesCode Holiday Program

Parents told us they wanted more regular opportunities for their girls to develop coding skills and feel empowered when using technology.

Kids told us they wanted more time to hang out with friends, have heaps of fun and make cool stuff on their iPads or laptops.

#MissMakesCode Holiday Program combines learning coding & STEM skills with fun & friendship. Delivered by qualified teachers and inspiring role models over the holiday break.

Every girl has the freedom to learn at their own pace – so we welcome everyone from coding newbies to advanced programmers. We’re all there to share our love of tech and to learn new things together!

Time:  Drop between 8.00-9am and pick up between 4-5.45pm

Location: The Arcade, South Melbourne
Cost: $600+GST for Week 1, $750+GST for Week 2

For the first time Girl Geek Academy are opening their doors over the school holidays! This program is for those girl geeks who are excited about spending a week indulging in their passion for tech and exploring the different paths that STEM skills can offer them.  As always there will be plenty of the famous Girl Geek Academy fun and excitement to keep the kids engaged and having a blast while learning.

There will be two different programs – one for 9-13 year olds running for four days, and one for 14-17 year olds running for 5 days.

Week One - 9 to 13 year olds (3-6 April in South Melbourne, Victoria)

Let’s have some fun with technology! The students will jump into STEM and Digital Technologies activities starting with simple drag-and-drop blocks and building on those skills throughout the week.  But it’s not all about sitting behind a computer – they’ll be working together to identify real world problems and solve them through creating and testing prototypes.

What will they need to bring?

Each child will need a pencil case, an iPad or laptop to work on, a water bottle, and enough food for lunch and 2 snack breaks.

Week Two - 14 to 17 year olds (9-13 April in South Melbourne, Victoria)

How do we understand why STEM is valuable in the real world? In this one week program you’ll build off the skills you already have and also learn new skills along the way. You may learn new coding languages and concepts along with entrepreneurial skills to solve a real world problem, or make new friends and collaborate together to build something.

You will be guided and inspired by industry experts and talented mentors that will also openly explore what it means to be an entrepreneur, technologist, game creator or designer. At the end of the week you will pitch your idea to the group and show off your prototype. Who knows… maybe the next big tech idea will be born!

What will you need to bring?

You will need a laptop to work on, a water bottle, and enough food for lunch and 2 snack breaks. If you have other tech tools or projects you want to work on, feel free to bring them along. We would also recommend a notebook & pen to scribble down all your great ideas.

Frequently Asked Questions

#MissMakesCode Holiday Program is a one-week immersion divided into age groups so the content can be tailored and the teachers can have appropriate experience with the age levels in attendance. The kids will be working in groups and building on what they learned and created the day before.  Therefore in order to secure appropriate staff and in respect to the other kids in their groups we need attendees to commit to the full week.

Every session is lead by a qualified teacher and supported by experts in their chosen field – whether that’s coding, robotics, entrepreneurship, or anything else we think the girls will love!

Most of the time the kids will simply need an iPad or other tablet, but some projects will require a laptop computer. You will have lots of notice beforehand, and if you have any problems just let us know and we may be able to loan your child a device for the day. There’s no apps or specific software that they need to download – we take care of everything on the day!

Unfortunately, no. We organise the events in advance including appropriate staff levels and workshop materials, and therefore cannot accomodate refunds.
