You've played games - now hear from the Girl Geeks who make them!

#SheMakesGames is an opportunity to learn and understand the world of video game development. It is a great place to start if you’ve ever been interested in the art of video games.

Maybe you’re a digital marketer yearning to build a community of game-loving fans or a graphic designer who loves building characters. Believe it or not your skills are desired in the games industry – and we’re bringing you the best of the best people to share what this amazing world is like!

From making games to so much more...

In 2015, Girl Geek Academy co-founder Lisy Kane curated the first ever Australian all-female game-making day, #SheMakesGames. Our flagship event was held at ACMI-X in October 2016 as part of Melbourne International Games Week. The keynote speaker for the day was Brie Code who spoke about what video games can be and provided an incredible insight to her experiences as a game developer and advocate.

From here we heard from talented women in the local game development industry about their journeys into the games industry and what the game development cycle looks like. There was also a unique opportunity to have hand-on workshops with experts from Unreal, Mountains, Lumi Consulting, Zero Latency and EA Firemonkeys.

Biography

I’m Sarah Moran, an Australian woman with a love of humans, the internet and a good session of karaoke. I love meeting new people and specialise in giving hugs.

I write here. I’m a bit ranty and foul-mouthed but I am passionate and unapologetic in the right way. Sometimes I also publish my writing on Huffington Post.

Currently working on:

  • Teaching 1 million women tech skills by 2025 with Girl Geek Academy. GGA has hosted Australia’s first all-female hackathon (#SheHacks), makerfest (#SheMakes) and game development program (#SheMakes_Games). In 2016 we will run #SheJams – Australia’s first all-female Game Jam!
  • Roving reporter for That Startup Show.
  • Swing dancing my way through life. It’s great fun and you can’t help but smile!
  • Aiming to move to San Francisco so I can swing dance in Golden Gate Park on Sundays. *swoon*
  • Taking the next steps on my stand up. Did my first show after completing a course, shit-scared about a second show!
